Iraqw Tribe & Talking Conservation

“Indigenous knowledge means a lot, so it needs to be transferred to new generations in one way or another,” is a Learning Sentence of the days experiences shared by Amber.

Meeting an Iraqw elder, the YGP participants learned traditional techniques of constructing homes, heating, and making clothes. Learning about the Iraqw tribe, highlighted the vast differences between various Tanzanian tribal groups.  After an evening discussion on the importance of nature, participants explored the different motivations behind conservation efforts.

Ann – “Progress and conservation does not have to in conflict; in fact the more progressed we are the more effort we should put in to conservation.”

Jaelyn – “We must be prepared to make sacrifices for anything we love, and that most certainly includes the conservation of the planet.”
